Show allThank you for visiting the website of the Swiss National Museum (SNM). Article 13 of the Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation and Swiss data protection law give every person the right to privacy and protection from the misuse of their personal data. Data protection is important to us and we comply with these provisions when you visit our web pages.
Personal data is processed where necessary for the proper functioning of a website, for its continuous improvement, and for the provision of our content and services. Below you will find information about which data the SNM collects from website visitors, how these are used, and how these are processed by third parties where necessary.
The website is generally hosted on servers owned by the SNM and your personal data are processed in Switzerland. Any exceptions to this are detailed below.
When you access the website, the following information is stored in log files: IP address, date, time, browser query, and general information transmitted regarding the operating system or browser. These usage data form the basis for statistical, anonymous evaluations which enable us to provide a functional website and continuously improve our content and services.
Our website uses ‘cookies’. Cookies are text files that are stored on your computer permanently or temporarily when you use visit this website. The purpose of cookies is to ensure the proper functioning of the website and its features (e.g. shopping basket and language settings). Cookies are also used to analyse the use of this website for the purposes of statistical evaluation and continuous improvement.
Data is gathered when information is transmitted to us from your browser and cookies are generated. When you visit our website the following data is collected from your browser and sent to us according to your individual browser settings:
You can find a detailed and active list of all cookies collected by following this link.
You can alter your browser settings so that you are informed about cookies before they are saved and can decide whether to accept them on a case-by-case basis, or to reject cookies in general. Please note, however, that in this case you may not be able to enjoy full functionality of all our website features.
Our websites use Matomo, an open-source web analytics tool. This enables us to track visitor behaviour on our website and measure and continuously improve the reach of our website.
Matomo runs ‘on premises’ on our own SNM servers. All information processed is therefore saved on the servers of the SNM, meaning that we retain full control of it. The IP address is partially anonymised and Matomo runs without the use of cookies.
The following data from visitors to our website may be collected and processed in connection with this:
Usage data from the media stations in our exhibitions may be combined with this information collected from our website, but this does not involve personal data.
You may adjust your browser settings so that you are always informed of the saving and transmission of your data in advance and can refuse permission for this to take place.
You can post comments on the SNM blog. To add a comment, you must provide a name and an email address. The date and time of the comment will also be saved in the background. These data will be stored on our own SNM servers in Switzerland and will not be passed on to third parties.
You may request for your comments and data collected in this regard to be deleted at any time. Please email blog@nationalmuseum.ch.
If you get in touch with us at your own initiative, e.g. when making a booking enquiry or tour reservation, your contact details will be saved in a separate database which is not associated with the anonymous log files. You may cancel your registration or may request that your data be deleted at any time (see section 9).
The following data are collected in this regard:
These data will remain on the servers of the SNM in Switzerland and will not be passed on to or reviewed by third parties.
If you fill out other forms on our website (e.g. room hire or photographic permission forms), the data collected from these will be processed for the purposes stated in the form and saved on the internal servers of SNM in Switzerland. Photographs and videos of events will be used for the purposes stated in the form and published on the corresponding media channels. They will not be passed on to third parties.
You can sign up for our newsletter using the form on our website. To subscribe to the newsletter, you are required to provide the following information: email address and desired language. You may also provide additional information which is not mandatory but which enables us to provide a more personalised service.
In each newsletter that we send, you have the option to amend, edit, or delete the information you provided when registering.
If you no longer wish to receive a newsletter, please click on the unsubscribe link which you can find in all our newsletters.
To send our newsletter, we use the services of mailXpert GmbH, based in Zurich. MailXpert is a service which can be used to organise and analyse the sending of newsletters.
Using mailXpert, we can analyse our newsletter campaigns. When you open an email sent with mailXpert, a file (web beacon) contained in the email connects to the mailXpert servers. It can then be determined whether a newsletter has been opened and which links have been clicked on. Technical information is also collected (e.g. the time of your visit, IP address, browser type, and operating system). This information is, however, only collected in pseudonymised form and cannot be assigned to a specific newsletter recipient. It is used exclusively for the statistical analysis of newsletter campaigns. The results of these analyses can be used to better align future newsletters to recipients’ interests.
If you do not want your activities to be analysed by mailXpert, you must unsubscribe from the newsletter. We provide a link for this in each newsletter. You can also unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time by sending us an email (see section 9).
Media representatives may gain free museum entry with a press pass. For statistical purposes and for keeping track of any resulting media reports, you are required to submit the following information via electronic form before receiving a ticket:
The following data are also collected:
You may also indicate whether you would like to receive press releases and invitations to press conferences by email in future. If you agree, we will import your data (name, medium, email and language) into the mailXpert newsletter system (see section 3.2). With each message that you receive from us, you have the option to change, edit, or delete the information you provided when registering with us.
If you state that you do not want to receive information from us, your data will be deleted after three months at the latest.
We send invitations to exhibition openings at the SNM by post and sometimes by email. You will receive an invitation if you have been marked in our database as being interested or you have been added to the database in connection with an exhibition.
The following information is listed in our database:
In some cases, the following data will also be recorded:
It is necessary to register in advance for some exhibition openings at the SNM. In this case, you will receive a link to our website in the invitation, whereby you will need to provide the following information:
The date of registration will also be saved. You may also choose to provide the name of your institution/company. We only use the data that you enter on our website for organisational purposes. In addition, these data may be used to complete and/or correct existing data. Data entered on our website which are not transferred to other systems are deleted every six months.
If you no longer wish to receive invitations from the SNM, you may email us (see section 9) to request that we delete your data from our systems.
In the online shop on our website, you can purchase tickets for the museum as well as various events. You can also order other items such as annual passes, vouchers, and posters. When placing an order, you may either set up a customer account or check out as a guest providing your name, email, and billing address. If you set up a customer account, you may provide further information which is not strictly mandatory, but which will enable us to provide you with a more personalised service. You may delete your user account at any time by sending us an email (see section 9).
To request images of objects from the archive or place orders from the collection, the following data is required (mandatory information is marked*):
The relevant personal data will only be processed by employees of the SNM for the completion of your order and will not be transmitted to third parties.
The website of our ticket shop is hosted and maintained by Visitate GmbH, based in Berlin, Germany.
Visitate GmbH has given us an undertaking that it will process the data of our ticket shop users in compliance with data protection regulations and will not share such data with third parties.
Payment for orders placed on our website is managed by Worldline Schweiz AG with headquarters in France (Worldline SIX Payment Services). The payment data provided will also be transmitted to this company.
The SNM undertakes to conclude contracts regarding lawful personal data processing and protection with third parties that process personal data on our behalf.
Interested persons may apply directly to vacancies in the job portal of the SNM website.
In addition to your title, surname, and first names, the usual correspondence information including postal address, email address, and phone number will be saved in the e-recruitment system during the application process. Application documents such as the cover letter, CV, professional and educational certificates, and employment references will also be saved.
These data will be exclusively saved, evaluated, processed, or internally forwarded in connection with your job application. They will only be accessible to employees in HR and those who are responsible for appointing the candidate at the SNM. With the exception of the company HR Campus AG (see section 6.2 below) and HR service providers and/or professionals who very occasionally assist with the recruitment process, your data will not be passed on to companies or persons external to the SNM and will be exclusively processed in Switzerland. These data may be processed for statistical purposes (e.g. reporting). In such cases, individual persons will not be identifiable.
When submitting an application electronically, you may access, change, or unilaterally delete your data at any time.
If you take up a position at the SNM as a result of your application, your application documents, or at least a selection of them, will be added to your personnel record. The remaining data will be deleted 3 months after the conclusion of the recruitment process at the latest. If your application for a role is unsuccessful, your information will be deleted 3 months after the conclusion of the recruitment process at the latest.
The SNM uses the services of HR Campus AG with headquarters in Switzerland. This company uses software from Abacus Umantis AG.
The SNM undertakes to conclude contracts regarding lawful personal data processing and protection with third parties that process personal data on our behalf.

We have configured these elements so that they are deactivated by default. If you launch and activate a relevant network or platform, the operators of this social network will be able to record your visit to our website and the content that you clicked on, and use this information for their purposes. In order for content from these third parties to be displayed (e.g. videos), they usually require your IP address so that they can send their content to your browser.
If you have an account with one of the social media companies above and are logged in when you go to our website, then this information may be associated with your social media account.
This processing of your personal data is always the responsibility of the operator in question and is subject to their terms of service and data privacy statements.
We take appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect your personal data from manipulation, loss, and unauthorised third-party access. Our security measures are continuously improved in line with the latest technical developments.
You have a right to access, free of charge, your personal data processed by us at any time. You also have the right to amend or restrict this data processing and to request the release of certain personal data for the purpose of sending it somewhere else. You have the right to deletion of your personal data, provided that we are not obliged or entitled to retain some of your personal data according to current laws and regulations.
